Tasmania’s Move to Mag Flow Metering

The Challenge

Balancing Fire Safety and Daily Demand

TasWater is the sole water and sewage service provider for Tasmania, managing over 200,000 water connections and more than 176,000 sewerage connections with an annual turnover exceeding $300 million. Despite being a relatively new entity, much of its infrastructure is over 20 years old.

Modern pipelines typically separate fire service and domestic water lines, but TasWater’s older network was built before dual-line designs became standard. Replacing or duplicating pipelines would have been too costly and time-consuming.

Additionally, their existing bypass meters posed significant risks:

  • Mechanical failure could obstruct flow—critical in emergency fire service situations.

  • Constant high flow from industrial use risked meter reliability and could compromise water availability during emergencies.

Balancing Fire Safety and Daily Demand
The Solution

Magflow Retrofit with No Pipe Changes

BERMAD AU proposed a non-invasive, innovative solution using the MUT2200 Euromag Magnetic Flow Meter. The solution was tailored to fit TasWater’s infrastructure without requiring pipe modifications. Key enhancements included:

  • A custom-designed earthing kit to remove signal noise and ensure billing accuracy.
  • Fast-response MUT2200 sensors for near-instant flow registration.
  • Custom output integration with TasWater’s AMR system for seamless data collection and processing.

This approach provided a cost-effective, accurate, and reliable alternative to traditional bypass meters—supporting both fire service and high-demand industrial use without compromising safety or performance. The custom earthing kit developed by BERMAD AU eliminated flow “noise” and became a standard on all Euromag BERMAD AU meters used by TasWater.

To further improve performance, fast-acting MUT2200 sensors were deployed, ensuring meters responded as soon as a tap was turned on. This responsiveness translated into more detailed and accurate usage data for billing. BERMAD AU also configured meter outputs to integrate with TasWater’s AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) system, allowing remote access and real-time data analysis.

Together, these innovations ensured greater reliability, eliminated mechanical failure risks, and improved data accuracy and convenience. Over 100 installations are now active across Tasmania, and TasWater continues to replace its existing combination meters with BERMAD AU’s magflow technology. The success of this collaboration has paved the way for future projects between BERMAD AU and TasWater.
