Precision Farming in the Hills
On steep slopes overlooking the Sea of Galilee is an 8.4 ha mango and avocado plantation. Owned by Kibbutz Beit Zera, this project draws water from a regional consortium supply line, utilizing pressure-compensated drip irrigation for precise water delivery. However, the terrain and shared supply infrastructure presented major hydraulic challenges which BERMAD addressed through an integrated holistic solution, tailored to micro-irrigation systems.
Handling Hillside Headaches
Since there a few plantations situated across the hillside, along with substantial elevation changes within the plots, the supply line faces hydraulic challenges:
- The system is connected to a communal supply line also serving upstream farms; when those farms open or close their irrigation systems, sudden pressure surges (spikes) propagate into the line.
- Along the irrigation lateral lines, variable pressure from the combination of elevation and fluctuating demand affects irrigation uniformity.
- At the lower zones of the field, runoff and accumulation of water during filling or drainage lead to puddling, machinery bogging, and root health issues through overwatering and stagnation.
To overcome these, BERMAD designed a solution that regulate pressure, protects the system from surges, and mitigates runoff in the lower sectors.
Tailored Valve-Based Design
1. Protecting the Main Supply Line from Pressure Spikes
Due to the altitude difference, the system’s static pressure is around 9 bar. When irrigation stops or when one of the upstream plots connected to the same supply line gets turned on or off, sudden pressure surges may occur. These spikes can damage the entire network, in particular the filtration units which are sensitive to sudden pressure changes.
To protect the downstream system, the WW-720 (8″) Hydraulically operated Pressure Reducing Valve that reduces higher upstream pressure to lower downstream pressure. The WW-720 design ensures reliable performance even on steep terrain.
For supplementary protection from transient surges, IR-43Q Quick Pressure Relief Valve was installed downstream to the PRV. It opens and relieves excessive line pressure when it rises above the preset maximum. The response to a system pressure rise is immediate, accurate and repeatable.
2. Regulating Pressure Along the Irrigation Lines
To address pressure fluctuations and minimize hydraulic pressure spikes when valves open or close, BERMAD selected composite double-chamber valves from the 100-DC series, a hydraulically operated, diaphragm-actuated control valve made with robust composite materials, often used in drip and micro systems.

The double-chambered design provides a powerful response when going into regulation while providing soft, non-slam closing. This high-performance valve is specially designed for quick response and challenging regulation requirements. The hYflow Y-body design reduces obstructions and pressure loss. This design also allows easy in-line inspection, maintenance, and conversion between configurations.
BERMAD’s solution also includes M10 composite electromagnetic flow meters for accurate metering,
enable precise monitoring and efficient irrigation management.
To support air control during filling and prevent vacuum conditions during pipeline drainage, BERMAD’s C10 composite combination air valve is integrated in the system. The C10 is a high quality combination air valve suitable for a wide range of irrigation networks and operating conditions. It evacuates air during pipeline filling, allows efficient release of air pockets from pressurized pipes, allowing large volume air intake in an event of a network draining. Integrating air valves within the system enhances efficiency, saves energy, protecting the system from pressure surge.
3. Preventing Runoff Accumulation at Line Ends
To counter water over-accumulation at the lower zones, BERMAD recommended installing an IR-130-DC Pressure Sustaining Valve at the midpoint of the drip manifold. This valve sustains minimum required set upstream pressure and opens only when line pressure exceeds that threshold. It prevents total drainage of water downhill when irrigation stops, which minimizes puddle formation and associated agronomic damage.
