The Challenge

The national water company, ‘Mekorot’ requested BERMAD’s expertise, ongoing professional support, and site service to replace the existing surge protection system which has been operating continuously for 15 years. During those years, the pumping station was protected by other hydraulic control valves.rnrnThe new solution is expected to be reliable and provide Mekorot with u0022Peace of Mindu0022, ensuring superior surge protection for such a large-scale strategic bulk line. To ensure accurate and reliable results, BERMAD engineers conducted a surge analysis using advanced transient flow software.

The Solution

Smart Flow Monitoring Integration

Based on a comprehensive analysis of the system requirements, BERMAD proposed the following solution: Five units of BERMAD WW-735-55-09-M DN500 / 20” Surge Anticipating Valves (4 operating + 1 standby). The five valves were installed in parallel to increase the relief flow capacity and reduce the discharge load, providing a fully redundant surge solution. These valves have electric operation by solenoid connected to the pumping station electric board for immediate opening when the pumps trips due to power failure, along with a hydraulic backup of pilots sensing the mainline pressure and opening in severe pressure drops associated with pressure surges.rnrnThe BERMAD WW-735-55-09-M valves, part of the BERMAD 700 Series, are known for their high flow capabilities and robust design. They immediately open in response to an electric signal, dissipating high-pressure waves and eliminating surges. The unique hydrodynamic globe design with a special open plug ensures minimal cavitation and noise, even under high differential pressure conditions. Additionally, their ability to smoothly close drip-tight prevents closing surges, enhancing system reliability.rnrnu003c!u002du002d /wp:paragraph u002du002du003e u003c!u002du002d wp:paragraph u002du002du003ernrnBERMAD’s equipment was installed and commissioned in 2020 and operates with high satisfaction. In addition, BERMAD supplied an air control solution along the rising main using C70 Combination Air Valves.
