Van điều khiển thủy lực giảm áp/lưu áp có thể thực hiện một trong hai chức năng riêng biệt: Khi lắp đặt trên đường ống chính, van duy trì áp suất ngược (thượng lưu) tối thiểu đã cài đặt trước, bất kể lưu lượng thay đổi hoặc áp suất hạ lưu biến động. Khi lắp đặt như một van tuần hoàn “rẽ nhánh từ đường ống”, van sẽ xả áp suất đường ống vượt quá mức tối đa đã cài đặt trước.
